Is it okay to ask for a military discount?

It turns out these hidden military discounts are quite common. It might initially feel awkward to ask for a discount but the more you ask the more you'll get the hang of it. In my experience most people are happy to say yes to the request and many times those who have said no do so apologetically.

30+ Best Student Discounts to Use in College During 2021

Being a student can stretch your patience, time management, and bank account, but did you know that it also comes with some perks?

It can be difficult to find the time to work many hours while being a full-time student. That's why every penny counts. Luckily, many companies offer student discounts to help save students money on college expenses. You may be wondering, "How do I find student discounts?" Here are some of the best student discounts for college students in 2022. Note: Discounts listed below may be subject to change at any time.

This year, the Back to School offer applies to purchases of any iMac, Mac mini, Mac Pro, MacBook Pro and MacBook Air including build-to-order options. On the iPad front, only purchases of iPad Pro and iPad Air are eligible.

Apple launches Back to School student offer: free AirPods with iPad and Mac purchases

Apple has launched its Back to School promotional offer for the 2021 season. Customers can get a free pair of AirPods bundled with the purchase of eligible Mac and iPad purchases.

Free bundled AirPods are available as standard, and customers can pay the extra to get AirPods Pro. Students, parents and school faculty in the United States can take advantage of the offer from now until September 27. Details after the break …

Although this is currently limited to the US Apple Store for Education, Apple typically rolls out identical Back to School promotions in other regions like the UK a few weeks after the US campaign begins.

This year, the Back to School offer applies to purchases of any iMac, Mac mini, Mac Pro, MacBook Pro and MacBook Air including build-to-order options. On the iPad front, only purchases of iPad Pro and iPad Air are eligible.

Across both iPad and Mac deals, you are saving a total of $159 … the price of the standard second-generation AirPods with wired charging case. You can choose to get the AirPods with wireless charging case for an additional $40, or upgrade to AirPods Pro for $90 extra.

In all cases, students are saving $159 compared to buying the products from the Apple Store individually. However, note that you are also benefiting from the 5-10% student discount on the price of the Mac and iPad too.

For instance, the student price of an M1 MacBook Air is $899. For the duration of the Back to School promotion, students can get both the MacBook Air and second-generation AirPods for $899. It’s a decent offer.

That being said, it probably makes sense to look elsewhere for the best deal. The second-generation AirPods are several years old at this point, with rumors of a model redesign coming later this year, and are regularly discounted at third-party retailers. You also may be able to find standalone discounts on M1 Macs.

I'm guessing either way that most K-12 students would have a difficult time paying for the subscription and there could be some legal things as well (maybe not?). How many kids have their own credit card/debit card with a continuous flow of cash on it? Maybe its a lot, not sure. I don't have kids.

macxpress

Strange that Apple restricts it to post-High School programs.

Perhaps, grade, middle and high school students are more likely to be on the family plan? (Which is actually the same price ($5/mo) if one student is added, and gets progressively cheaper for each additional one -- because the $5/month surcharge is spread across more students).

(BTW, the $5/mo I'm speaking of is the difference between the $10/mo individual plan and the $15/mo family plan)

All educational discounts for students have always been for Higher Ed only as far as I can remember. K-12 students cannot get discounts on Macs, AppleCare, etc either. This is nothing new from Apple. Faculty and Staff however are able to get discounts whether they're K-12 or Higher Ed.

I have struggled over the past 2 years to really choose one of the two services and stick to it. I use mostly Apple products and love the design of Apple Music, the way the library works, the artist radio, lyrics feature and the way the CarPlay app works. However, Spotify has some cool features including the ability to see what friends are listening to, live group sessions, and the queue being better as well. Curious what many of you use (assuming Apple Music in this sub) and how you came to your decision? I will also be posting this in a few other subs to just get thoughts.

    Helpful Hugz

I've been primarily a Spotify user but have intermittently used/tried Apple Music several times this past year or two with the intent of possibly switching to Apple Music. Here's my perspective from having used both side by side:

Things I Like About Apple Music

    - The UI. It's really nice and has dark/light modes.

    - Library organization is so much nicer. It's easier to find music, manage the music I've saved and downloaded, etc.

    - It has Lyrics!! I realize this shouldn't be a big deal, but with Spotify we're still waiting on lyrics.

    - No ads or promotions. Just my music. The fact that it doesn't have podcasts integrated is sometimes a pro and sometimes a con. I can't really decide.

    - Everything is really easy to navigate. It's easy to see titles to songs and such.

    Things I Like About Spotify

    - Music discovery is much better compared to Apple Music. I can always find some sort of new music or playlist, whether it's finding a playlist someone posted here on Reddit, searching for a particular genre or year, or just randomly searching within the app for a new playlist.

    - Queuing music is (IMO) better than it is in Apple Music. I really enjoying queuing up a bunch of songs to listen to throughout my day.

    - Podcasts. I will admit I have a love/hate relationship with podcasts in Spotify. On one hand, I love that I can mix up my queue with both podcasts and music. On the other hand, I HATE all the annoying popups and promotions Spotify has for podcasts.

    - Spotify Connect. This is one of the BIG things that always draws me back to Spotify. Apple Music dosesn't have anything comparable. I love that I can play Spotify through other speakers and devices but control it via my iPhone. This feature is a killer feature if you listen to Spotify on more than one device and aren't completely in the Apple ecosystem.

    - Spotify handoff. It just works so well. Again, if you're listening to music on more than one device and like to seamlessly move between devices, this is a fantastic feature.

    So which do I recommend?

I think which service you use depends on how you use the service and what things are more important to you. If music discovery, using the service on multiple devices, and sharing playlists with others is your priority, definitely go with Spotify because those things are either non-existent or really limited in Apple Music. However, if you really want a nice UI and better library and playlist management, go with Apple Music. In my experience both services have their own strengths (and weaknesses), it's just about what's important to you.

What I would recommend is, if possible, use both services side by side. When I've done this, I copy my playlists over to Apple Music and then use the services at the same time. I naturally see which service I gravitate to. Not surprisingly, the things that keep me personally gravitating to Spotify are playlist/music discovery and Spotify Connect.

Apple Music is Apple's streaming music service, similar to rival streaming services like Spotify, Amazon Music Unlimited, Google Play Music, Tidal, and others.

The new option is launching in the United States, plus six other countries, but unfortunately, Canada is not part of this student offering, yet (are you really surprised?):

Apple Music Launches Student Plans for 50% Off, But Not in Canada

Apple today is rolling out student pricing for Apple Music, at a discounted rate of 50% off, for eligible college and university students, reports TechCrunch. So this means the standard $9.99 per month rate would be $4.99 instead, for up to four years following sign up (they don’t have to be continuous years).

The new option is launching in the United States, plus six other countries, but unfortunately, Canada is not part of this student offering, yet (are you really surprised?):

The option isn’t just arriving in the U.S., though. Students in other countries, including the U.K., Germany, Denmark, Ireland, Australia, and New Zealand, will also be able to take advantage of the new membership option.

However, because Apple Music is priced slightly differently in other markets, the cost of the student membership will vary. But in all markets, it will be 50 percent off the standard subscription price.

Apple is working with student verification provider UNiDAYS to ensure eligible enrolment and customers can make the change on the web or within Apple Music on iOS or Android.

Apple Music is reportedly set to undergo a revamp, with details to be provided at upcoming WWDC in June, and a release pegged with iOS 10 this fall. Apple Music currently has 13 million paying subscribers and costs $9.99/$14.99 per month for a single/family plan in Canada.

Gone are the days that we have to carry around heavy CD players to bring our music with us, everywhere we go. In the age of streaming, we have access to millions of music from all over the world in the palm of our hands.

5 Ways to Get Apple Music for Free

While Apple Music is a subscription service, there are ways to get Apple Music for free through trials, limited-time deals, and more. Here are few methods to try Apple Music for free.

    1. Use the Free Trial

For Apple device users who have never experienced Apple Music before, you can claim a three-month free trial. To do so, go to the Apple Music website and click Try it free.

Bear in mind that while the first few months will be free, you will be charged the monthly subscription fee afterward.

    2. Watch Out for Partnerships

Every now and then, companies promote Apple Music to their members by offering free trials in exchange for things like signing up to their mailing list or joining a service.

For example, Best Buy had a six-month free Apple Music trial for Best Buy account holders. Verizon had a similar promotion for subscribers of its Get More Unlimited plan. While there are no permanent promotions and partnerships, you can follow social media pages for updates on new campaigns.

    3. Use Promo Codes

Occasionally, Apple runs promotions for free Apple Music through other brands under its portfolio. In 2019, Apple released a special promotion with Shazam that generated six-month free subscriptions to Apple Music.

Occasionally, Apple also has special promotions for students. In 2021, Apple announced free six-month Apple Music trials for students taking bachelor and post-graduate degrees in the US and select countries. While there’s no telling if Apple will keep its student promo codes as a permanent pricing option, it’s a great way to get discounted subscriptions if you fit the bill.

    4. Subscribe to Apple One

For many Apple users, purchasing an Apple One subscription can be beneficial for several reasons. Sometimes, it’s increasing your cloud storage capacity. Other times, it’s getting access to Apple TV. Thankfully, if you’ve found a reason to purchase Apple One previously, an Apple Music subscription comes along with it.

Sign up, and you can stream more than 90 million songs (all now offered in lossless audio for nothing extra) ad-free while also gaining access to exclusive playlists and live radio that you can listen to across all of your devices.

How Apple Music compares to the competition

Spotify and Apple Music transfer on a smartphone.

Spotify not only has the lead over Apple Music when it comes to global reach, but in the United States, it also just recently took the lead over Apple Music with its 44.7 million paying subscribers, compared to Apple’s 37-million. But still, Apple is by no means a slouch, offering 90-million songs, 30,000 playlists, and< best-in-class human-run radio stations along with other exclusive content, giving it a big fan base in America.

    Music and podcast selection

Spotify reigns king over Apple when it comes to its enhanced music-discovery tools, but its library is somewhat more limited (although that difference is narrowing). Many eclectic music lovers will appreciate Apple Music’s broader catalog. While Apple has exclusive releases and live radio stations, Spotify tends to have more popular podcasts, and has been pushing human-curated playlist content to counter Apple’s live stations. Both services also allow for any streaming track to be downloaded offline for later listening.

Apple’s playlists are a bit more in-depth and personalized than Spotify’s, especially thanks to a 2021 update that added hundreds of new human-curated playlists for moods and activities, making it a lot easy to find a playlist for just about anything, from dinner parties to a creative drawing session to snowboarding. Apple also added enhanced Siri abilities when you tell the assistant to, “Play more like this.”

    If free is your jam

However, the two top competitors differ in a couple of ways at the moment. First, Spotify remains the only one with a free version available, which still allows users to play on-demand tracks (with some limitations on mobile devices, but none on desktop) in exchange for ads. That makes it an easy choice if you don’t want to pay anything for your music service. If you do, Apple Music’s voice-only option is currently the least expensive option, although rumors hold that Spotify is working on its own low-cost option for a similar offering sometime in the future.

    Sound quality

Second, if audio format and quality are important to you, Apple is clearly at the head of the pack: The company had already offered a number of tracks in its spatial audio format as part of the iOS 14 launch (which pairs perfectly with the AirPods Max headphones). But in the spring of 2021, Apple Music announced spatial audio with support for Dolby Atmos Music as well as lossless audio across its entire catalog of more than 90 million songs. Lossless audio starts at CD quality, which is 16-bit at 44.1kHz and goes up to 24 bit at 48kHz.
